TFM is committed to improving the quality of education and the mentoring of young people in its mining concession, with a view to the integral development of the community.

From the dawn of its mining operations in 2006, Tenke Fungurume Mining has been committed to a better future for the young people of its concession. To achieve this, the company drew up a comprehensive development plan through its community development department, the first tool for implementing the social commitment plan, with a particular focus on improving the quality of education and mentoring young people.

This plan was reinforced in 2010, with the creation of the TFM Community Social Fund, the second tool for implementing TFM's corporate social responsibility. A number of youth projects have been implemented. These include infrastructures that were almost non-existent. To this end, the Social Fund has built and equipped around 15 schools in the TFM concession, while Community Development has built and rehabilitated 7.

Over and above the infrastructure dimension, the company finances several university and high school scholarship programs for the concession's schoolchildren, in the knowledge that education is the foundation of the future for young people. The aim is to create a responsible elite.

The Mutoshi scholarship, launched in 2010, has so far registered 179 beneficiaries, 44 of whom are still in training. And thanks to this scholarship, 5 students completed their humanitarian studies in 2022, including Kaswing Yav, a provincial winner with 72% in industrial chemistry.

TFM's Community Social Fund financed two types of scholarships:

Firstly, the local scholarship for secondary education. This is intended for the best pupils in the concession's schools. To date, 1,636 students have benefited. In 2022, a total of 414 students from 23 secondary schools benefited from this scholarship.

Secondly, the university scholarship. Launched in 2016, this scholarship has 89 student beneficiaries. To date, 17 students have already completed their academic course; 9 of them in the course of 2022, among them a great distinction.

Wilson Makuya: "I've just finished my Master's degree with great distinction. Thank you to TFM. This scholarship program has really supported me in my academic career."

The Social Fund also built 5 new schools, including EP Majengo, EP Ekima, Institut Tenke, EP Kisanfu in Kando and EP Mangi in Lumbwe.

Looking ahead, the year 2023 will be rich in achievements. In line with the specifications, TFM is financing the construction of a higher institute of applied technology. Feasibility studies are underway. Other projects include the construction of two social hostels in Pumpi gare and Lumbwe, a nursery school in Nguba and six elementary school in various parts of the concession, notably in Kafwaya, Pumpi, Mwanga Musonge, Mwanga Mangi, Sangana and Tshilongo. In addition, there are two play areas for youngsters in Tenke and Fungurume, and an inter-school soccer tournament.
