To deal with the health problems that plagued its 1,600 km² concession, with its galloping population jumping from just a few tens of thousands in 2006 to more or less 300,000 today, over 100 villages and two major urban centers, Tenke and Fungurume, Tenke Fungurume Mining began by identifying problems linked to basic social needs, mainly the lack of drinking water, malaria, the lack of adequate infrastructure, in short, the virtual non-existence of an egalitarian and efficient sanitation system.

Since 2006, eight health centers have been built and two rehabilitated, the Fungurume health zone has received regular support in the form of medicines and medical inputs, thus facilitating access to quality care for the entire community living in the TFM concession, and drinking water has been supplied via a water supply network in Tenke and Fungurume, and water wells in the villages.

A prime example is the malaria prevalence rate, which has fallen by more than 70% in the concession thanks in particular to the integrated malaria control program, including indoor residual spraying, which has been carried out every year since 2008.

Tenke Fungurume Mining's support in the health sector is multi-faceted. It covers several other diseases and epidemics, such as Covid-19, HIV, TBC, measles and cholera.

In 2022, as in the previous year, TFM provided the Fungurume health zone with a large consignment of medicines and medical inputs to fill the gap left by other partners, as requested by this medical authority. As part of its commitment to excellence, the company intends to equip Fungurume with a 200-bed general referral hospital (HGR). The architectural plans have been validated by the national Ministry of Health. The feasibility study was carried out with financial support from the TFM Community Social Fund.

The GRH construction site has already been home to a modern morgue, the work of the Fonds Social Communautaire. This morgue, with a capacity of 28 bodies, will serve the HGR and the whole of Fungurume.

And in Tenke, a project to extend the St Francois health center is also underway, financed by the Fonds Social Communautaire.

Like TFM's community development, the Community Social Fund, the company's second corporate social responsibility tool, is also being deployed in the healthcare sector. This will be reflected in a number of achievements in 2022. These include the construction of a health center in Tshilongo, the construction of standpipes and the drilling of around 10 water wells equipped with solar pumps, in addition to the 56 wells already drilled in previous years. We have also financed two training courses, one for 30 members of the well management committee to ensure proper management of contributions, hygiene around the well and sustainability in its management, and the other for 20 members of the well repair craftsmen; the aim is to ensure the maintenance and repair of wells in the event of malfunction.

Through all these achievements, TFM aims to forge strong communities in terms of health, an essential condition for building a robust and sustainable socio-economic fabric.
