——KFM Invites Community Members to Participate in Water Quality Monitoring

Recently, a special environmental initiative took place along the Kando River in the Democratic Republic of Congo. For the first time, KFM invited community representatives from several riverside villages to witness its water quality sampling process. This marks a significant shift in KFM’s environmental management mindset—from a professional internal process to a community participatory approach.

From Expertise to Transparency: Water Quality Monitoring

The Kando River is an important water body in the mining area, carrying both ecological and livelihood significance. KFM has long adhered to the requirements of Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIA), conducting regular sampling and commissioning third-party testing to ensure water quality compliance. However, bridging the gap between “technical accuracy” and “community trust” requires more than data—it demands transparency.

During this initiative, community representatives visited sampling sites at Kisanfu Koni Village, the mine entrance, the downstream outlet, and Dikanda Village, witnessing the entire process of sample collection, sealing, labeling, and delivery for testing. Some representatives took photos to document the event and expressed appreciation for the company’s environmental efforts.

“We didn’t know how the company monitored water quality before. Seeing it with our own eyes and being part of it today makes us feel reassured,” said one representative.

Several community members also suggested institutionalizing participatory monitoring and conducting regular transparent environmental inspections.

Community Participation for a Greener Future

KFM recognizes that the cost of environmental mismanagement far exceeds the investment in prevention. In response to growing global attention to environmental responsibility in the mining sector, KFM has proactively built a water quality monitoring system covering key points such as sources, drainage outlets, and village wells, continuously improving sampling frequency, analytical indicators, and response protocols.

Looking ahead, KFM will uphold the philosophy of community participation in its green development journey:

·  Strengthen technical and procedural foundations to enhance environmental monitoring and responsiveness

·  Deepen collaboration and communication with communities to build an ecosystem of shared information and mutual trust

On the path to sustainable development, KFM remains committed to openness, transparency, and accountability—working hand in hand with communities to protect the clarity and vitality of the Kando River.
