CMOC’s Australian operating site - Northparkes mine (NPM) announced in May 2020 that Kaitlyn Spence from Parkes and Lily Walsh from Forbes won the 2020 Northparkes Indigenous Scholarships.
The two recipients have been accepted into Charles Sturt University. Both Kaitlyn and Lily will receive $5,000 per year of their study as part of their non-technical scholarship. They will also receive a laptop to assist them with their tertiary studies. In addition to financial support, the students receive work placements on site. Northparkes also provides constant support throughout the duration of the study which ensures scholarship holders to attend, enjoy and eventually obtain employment in their chosen field.
These scholarships are a result of a signed relationship agreement with Northparkes' Wiradjuri Executive Committee (WEC) which aims to build sustainable Indigenous communities. Hubert Lehman, Northparkes Managing Director said, "The scholarship program is vital to Northparkes, both to help Indigenous people further their studies and also to help develop the Northparkes employee pipeline. "
In addition, Northparkes also invests in the Sumitomo Metal Mining Oceania (SMMO) supported Scholarship, which aims to promote and encourage careers in the mining industry and to assume the company’s commitment to the local community. The three successful recipients of this year will receive $3,000.
